The Oregon University System (OUS) has proudly accepted the 18”X24” poster art developed by Steven Lopez. The poster is part of “Get Real”- a statewide initiative to raise consciousness in computer science.
The (OUS) Chancellor's office ( www.ous.edu )works with the seven (university) campuses to plan and respond strategically to Oregon’s current and prospective needs for a highly educated, skilled citizenry and workforce. The scope of this work includes System-wide academic planning and program administration, student affairs and admissions, community college transfer and articulation, diversity planning and analysis, teaching and learning initiatives, distance education, off-site OUS centers, engineering and advanced technology initiatives, outreach and research policy.
Private industry was concerned that Oregon was importing more engineers, computer scientist and technology workers from other states. OUS developed the Computer Science Task Force as a way to answer the call of “grow our own”. The Task Force operates within the larger Engineering and Technology Industry Council, or ETIC ( www.oregonetic.org ).
The “Get Real” brochure-poster is one piece of a larger statewide effort in Oregon to build a strong pipeline of computer science professionals by reaching out early to high school students. The brochure uses a unique fold-out design to provide high school students with information on what computer science is all about- college programs, careers, and profiles of Oregonians currently involved in the field. After exploring this information, the last fold-out opens to an 18” x24” inch full color poster, designed to be attractive and “cool” enough that high school students will hang this on their bedroom walls, or at least hold on to it for future reference. The poster uses teen-directed images and concepts to show the nature of computer science as a global, creative, flexible and technical field that uses individual and team contributions to accomplish its work. The brochure-poster will also have a complementary website ( www.getreal.ous.edu ).
"Steven was very professional to work with, and strove to understand the project thoroughly from the onset,” said Bruce Schafer, executive director of ETIC. “We all loved the final product, and appreciated his artistic and technical expertise as well as his knowledge of the teen audience."
Steven said, “I had a lot of fun working on this poster. The layout and the style of it all was a good mix. I’m glad that Bruce and the rest of the team felt like they picked the right person for the job.”
The initiative starts this month.
