Steven Lopez in Conjunction with Bluepalm will begin a 3 month endeavor to complete a mural on the property of Mission PAU in San Gabriel California. While the high school students will learn how to paint on a large scale, Lopez will also involve art history as part of the curriculum. Lopez worked closely with the Bluepalm directors Jackie Planeix and Tom Crocker to design and implement an art education program tailored to suit the schools’ needs and goals. Both Lopez and Bluepalm’s commitment to artistic excellence coupled with their extensive understanding of school culture makes them the leaders in the field of arts education.
Crocker was happy to have Lopez on board and stated, “I was very gratified by the work he had accomplished to prepare the class. He knew a lot about murals and conveyed the knowledge in a generous, enthusiastic manner. This bodes well for his success with the kids.”
Since he returned to Los Angeles in 2003, it has been his goal to work with kids in the greater region. Lopez explained with a smile. “Where is a better place to be worki with students then in this town? This is where I saw myself years ago. The future is now.” While art in Southern California can be seen as a hip lifestyle, Lopez sees his work as a responsibility to the community. “ I’m happy to share my gift with others. Sometimes they need encouragement and a helping hand. With out that, how as a society can we say we are successful?”
Lopez will be working with approximately 10-15 students over the next several weeks. People who are interested in following the progress will be able read his blog at: http://frustr8.com/ikmb/
